Headquartered on Broadway
Steel City Builders is a general contractor and licensed electrical contractor based in Gary, Indiana. We build new homes, rebuild on existing foundations, and renovate houses across Lake County.
We are from here. That is not a marketing line — it is the reason the company exists in the form it does. Gary has a housing problem that does not look like the housing problem in most of the country: thousands of empty lots, a lot of them with foundations still in the ground, alongside solid old houses that need serious work rather than demolition. Most builders are not set up for either of those. We built the company around them.
Carrying our own electrical license is part of the same idea. In older housing stock the wiring is usually what decides whether a project is manageable or expensive, and having licensed electricians on staff means we can tell you that on the first visit instead of after demolition.
Licensed, bonded and insured in the State of Indiana as a general contractor and as an electrical contractor. Certificates of insurance and license numbers are available on request, and we encourage you to ask us — and anyone else you are considering — for them.
Why we drew our own plans
The Legacy Series exists because the houses available to families here were not designed for how those families actually live. Multiple generations under one roof is common in this city, and a floor plan with every bedroom upstairs does not serve a household with an older parent in it.
So we drew plans that do: a bedroom and full bath on the main floor, living space sized for everybody at the table, and construction meant to still be standing when the house passes to the next generation. That is where the name comes from.
Where we work
Gary is home and where most of our work is. We also build and renovate throughout Lake County, including Merrillville, Hobart, Griffith, Lake Station, Hammond, East Chicago, Munster, Highland, Schererville and Crown Point.
Outside that area, ask. Depending on the size of the project we may still be the right fit.
